AI 2017 part 2 highlights/ trends

hi all. 2nd half AI in 2017 was very fast paced and as usual its hard to keep up. many headlines on the subj. this is a 2nd half review.

seems like some of the biggest news is the increasing dominance of China in the area after the govt announced major initiatives, funding, and resolve/ determination.[b]

google/ deepmind continues to dominate headlines.[a] the other big news is googles alphago and alphazero that no longer required human training games![a2] officially its under the name of “reinforcement learning” but my feeling is that this technology is something like “directed learning” where the AI is manipulating its environment to “detect/ seek/ digest novelty,” and that this will be a key, paradigm shifting trend in the near future. the same algorithm also works in chess/ go!

starcraft[a3] and Dota are starting to show up in AI engines/ research and OpenAI just announced breakthru championship level play vs humans in Dota, and Deepmind is attacking starcraft. despite all this major domination, it looks like games will not move out of cutting edge research anytime soon.[c4]

another notable shift/ trend is that AI/ machine learning is starting to couple stronger with physics and robotics. eg Deepmind humanoid walking simulations etc.

most of the action is in corporate initiatives and startups.[d]

there is a lot of consternation and much worse about the future.[e] its a scary moment in the sense that humanity has never faced anything like it before. now, there are world-shattering possibilities of different levels lying in the future. but on the other hand, it reminds me of the trepidation that parents have about their kids. aka as hans moravec once coined the term, “mind children”. something humans have experienced/ endured since the beginning of humanity.

musk is in a category by himself for generating headlines.[e2] last year he got into some major conflicts/ pushback with leading AI researchers and it looks like maybe hes not blaring out the fearmongering as much. even more notable is the direct counterarguments by zuckerberg almost near namecalling.[e1][e2][e8][e17] seems somewhat rare for billionaires to argue openly with each other. starting to remind me of the gates vs jobs rivalry. musk also seems to have some )( amt of google-envy wrt eg brin, page, or hassabis. maybe the real purpose of inventing AI is to impress beautiful women, like amber heard? [e216] vanity fair profile of musk is brilliant, luv it! ❤

They are two of the most consequential and intriguing men in Silicon Valley who don’t live there. Hassabis, a co-founder of the mysterious London laboratory DeepMind, had come to Musk’s SpaceX rocket factory, outside Los Angeles, a few years ago. They were in the canteen, talking, as a massive rocket part traversed overhead. Musk explained that his ultimate goal at SpaceX was the most important project in the world: interplanetary colonization.

Hassabis replied that, in fact, he was working on the most important project in the world: developing artificial super-intelligence. Musk countered that this was one reason we needed to colonize Mars—so that we’ll have a bolt-hole if A.I. goes rogue and turns on humanity. Amused, Hassabis said that A.I. would simply follow humans to Mars.

how about the announcement of AI religion?[e3]

and very notably ethics awareness/ studies are really increasing starting out with relatively less complex/ more accessible ideas (compared to the singularity!) about algorithmic fairness and bias.[h2]
